Mellieha

Mellieha is a typical Maltese village that lies on the northern coast, making it the perfect location for Scuba Diving. Facing neighbouring islands Gozo and Comino it sits impressively on top of a hill overlooking the wide bay below. Mellieha is 13 miles from the capital Valletta and 14 miles from the airport.

Mellieha is one of Malta's most picturesque tourist destinations and boasts splendid hotels, fine restaurants, traditional shops and a majestic baroque church (built in late 19th century).

Diving...

Malta is considered to be the best diving in the Mediterranean and is surrounded by clear, calm waters just waiting to be explored. Sea temperatures average around 23ºC in summer and drop down to around 13ºC to 15ºC in winter.

Malta and Gozo are best known for good wreck diving; however there are also numerous reef dives to be done. Below are some of the more popular dive sites:

Rozi Wreck

Location: Cirkewwa Point
Maximum Depth: 34m
The Rozi was scuttled in 1992 as an underwater attraction after spending 20 years working in the Grand Harbor. This dive can be done from shore as the wreck is just 150m away from the entry point. On your way to the wreck you can see one of the best reefs in Malta - Cirkewwa. On the wreck you will find lots of fish that have made the wreck their home.

P29 Wreck

Location: Cirkewwa
Maximum Depth: 37m
Kondor class P29 has been scuttled off Cirkewwa in Malta. The East German Minesweeper sank just off Susies Pool on Tuesday the 14th of August. P29 served with the Armed Forces of Malta for over 12 years and was responsible for many offshore missions including asserting control over Malta´s Continental Shelf, anti-contraband missions, and numerous border control operations. The wreck sits upright at a maximum depth of 37 meters with the top reaching 12 meters. The wreck is found 150m from shore or to be precisely 100m from the drop off.

Um El Faroud Wreck

Location: 150m off from Wied Iz-Zurrieq
Maximum Depth: 34m
The Um El Faroud had been operating between Italy and Libya carrying refined fuel up to 1st February 1995. On the 3rd February 1995 it was docked at Malta Dry-docks and during the night an explosion occurred. The vessel suffered structured deformation and was considered, a total write off. On 2nd September 1998 the Um El Faroud was towed out its final destination. After the ship was anchored on location and kept in position by means of a small MDD tug, Um El-Faroud went under after nearly four hours. This dive can be done from shore, only 7min swim under water. Good dive to do on Nitrox 32 or 34%.

Alex’s Cave

Location: Comino
Maximum Depth: 16 m
This is an interesting cave curved out by wave action, with a sandy bottom and smooth sides. When entering the cave you can swim 15 meters into the gloomy recess, so a torch is recommended. There is a chimney at the back of the cave and you can surface to a natural light coming in through small cracks in the rock.

P31 Wreck

Location: Comino
Maximum Depth: 20 m
On 24th August 2009 the former patrol boat P31 was sunk in 20 metres of water on the western side of Comino. The patrol boat is 52 metres long and is the sister ship of the P29 which was sunk at Cirkewwa in 2007. The wreck has been cleaned and made safe, and is at an ideal depth for all levels of diver. Both the P31 and P29 were used in East Germany in the cold war era to patrol the river banks between the east and west. They were also used for mine sweeping operations between Germany and Denmark. Malta used them to patrol the continental shelf and against smuggling operations.

Malta is suitable for divers of all experience levels and with good visibility and very little underwater current; it is perfect for diver training.

Scuba diving sites are chosen on the day, depending on weather and sea conditions, to suit all levels of diving experience. From novice to technical divers, there are suitable dive sites for all.

During days on dry land the islands of Malta, Comino and Gozo provide much to explore, including: ancient temples, towns and nature reserves. We can arrange guided tours, or you can simply take your own time.
